How to Make Yourself More Valuable to Your Employer

In these times when companies are doing lay-offs and the market is still uncertain, how do you make yourself a valuable player to your employer? There may be no control of lay-offs or downsizing, but there are ways in which you can set yourself apart from your colleagues.  Consider these tips.

  1. Come into work early. Even if it is only one day a week, this will show your employer you want to get the day going.
  2. Make yourself look busy by being busy. If you run out of things to do in the day ask your supervisor if there are other things you can do. Showing some initiative will make your employer realize you want to be productive at work.
  3. Stay late one day a week. This will give you visibility to your employer.
  4. Continue to learn new skills. Even if you have a degree, it doesn’t hurt to take continuing education courses. With technology today, things are constantly changing and you need to find ways to keep up or stay ahead of the game.
  5. Become visible within your organization. If your employer has certain committees that you can join, by all means do so!
  6. Meet and exceed established goals. For example, if you are a sales person and you have to make a certain number of calls each day, make them!
  7. Get involved with your colleagues. I am not saying you need to be best friends with your co-workers, but make it a point to get along with those you work with during the day.
  8. Be positive and professional. Even when things are going wrong in your day, remain positive about the situation and stay professional.
  9. Be accountable for your own actions. If something happened and it was your fault, be sure to take responsibility and fix the problem.
  10. And above all else, act like you want to be there! If you truly want to be an employee of your organization, then act like you want to be there at all times. Take an interest in your work and what your organization does.

Follow some of these tips and you’re on your way to showing your value to your employer. In the long run, the most valuable employees at a company stand the best chance of keeping their jobs if the unfortunate happens and the company is forced to downsize.

  1. Good article – I do all you suggest & more, but sadly it has not benefited me in 2yrs. I will continue doing these things, though, because I know it will pay off – either with my present employer or in the future!
