Being overweight, and especially being obese, increases the risk of many chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, some cancers, arthritis, etc. These illnesses are linked by common risk factors associated with poor eating habits and tobacco use, but physical inactivity rates amongst the highest risk.
