  • As Area Job Market Sees Continued Growth, Staffing Firms add Services

Midlands Business Journal, November 20, 2012

Despite the pressures on the national economy, concerns about the fiscal cliff and uncertainty surrounding health care reform, Nebraska companies continue to grow. This keeps unemployment down and the job market competitive.

“Increased requests for executive assistants and mid-to-upper level administrative staff are one sign of an improving economic outlook, said Patty North, regional manager with Celebrity Staff, a division of C&A industries. “These are positions that were eliminated or combined with other roles in offices when the recession first began,“ she said. “A recent CareerBuilder survey indicates that more than 1 in 4 companies plan to hire in the 4th quarter.“ Good candidates may find themselves with several offers to choose from, North said. Interested companies are challenged to move fast when they find the right person. “There are software tools that many employers use to screen candidates, and if they don’t have the right key words on their resume, they may be overlooked,“ she said. Currently Celebrity Staff is working to identify passive candidates, people who are already employed but considering a job change. “Those individuals benefit from our ability to match them with an open position they may not know about or did not consider previously“ she said.

  • New graduates, women-owned businesses growth lending to future executive parity

    November 21, 2014

Support organizations and businesses alike are addressing gulfs between the likes of women’s participation in college outpacing stagnant male enrollment, and women’s underrepresentation in the executive level. Regional Manager Patty North is seeing more female executives among its Midwestern Celebrity Staff clients. I think we’re seeing more females being promoted, so it gives us an opportunity to coach individuals, she said. She referred to CNN Executive Vice President Gail Evans’ book, "Play Like a Man, Win Like a Woman,” as a reference, including addressing the issue of leaving arguments at the office door. Women can’t take business personally," she said. "I might win, you might win, but in the end we’re all still on the same team.” She is encouraged by confidence among younger females in business, and what she has noticed in recent years as women becoming more comfortable asking for what they want. There are a number of factors changing some of the positive shifts: North highlighted baby boomers retiring, and making way for high-profile CEOs (such as Yahoo and GM). There isn’t much of a fear, she indicated, with women challenging the system, especially among the younger generation farther removed from the barriers encountered by their grandmothers’ generation. North also sees new household expectations carrying over into the workforce. That said, she emphasized the importance of being supportive of young, new female professionals who possibly boast confidence existing employees didn’t have when starting out.

  • Shortage of qualified candidates hindering employers across industries

    May 10, 2015

Today companies need qualified workers as businesses grow but many are faced with a small pool of candidates. Lincoln‘s low unemployment rate has created increased demand for trained recruiters, both in recruiting firms and in-house corporate recruiting staff, said Patty North, general manager of Celebrity Staff, a division of C&A Industries. In a low unemployment market where few people are not working, businesses need to be more open to hiring people with transferrable skills, North said. Employees need to be willing to train on-the-job-specifics in order to fill vacancies. The other option is for companies to use recruiting firms that build relationship with candidates and can match prospects to the jobs. Knowing how to leverage search engine optimization for online ads is critical to getting the most out of recruiting efforts and many businesses may not be up to date on these techniques, North said. “Every company should examine starting pay and where every employee is at with regards to compensation at least once a year to make sure they are competitive,” North said

  • Omaha job market good for economy but makes for tight labor pool

Midlands Business Journal, November 27, 2015

Omaha has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation which is good for the local economy but also makes it difficult to secure top talent in a tight labor market. Eric Beck, sales manager at Celebrity Staff, said that entry–level office-clerical and support staff positions are difficult to fill because as new software becomes available, there’s a shortage of individuals with the necessary skills. Customer service is also hurting at this time of year when stores ramping up their seasonal staff drain many job seekers out of the availability pool. The biggest upward trend has been firms hiring HR staff, from generalist to HR manager level – the generalists because the employment market is so low firms need individuals who can recruit candidates and managers because employees are aging out of the market. “I’ve probably seen more HR openings in the past 60 to 90 days than I used to see in six months,” Beck said.
