No, I Can’t Help You

I recently changed positions with my company and as I continue to gain knowledge and learn my new role, I have come to the realization that I cannot help everyone. Until just recently, I have always been a people pleaser and I have been the person to say “yes” to any request. Over the last few weeks, I have had to say “No, I can’t help you.” For me, that is one of the most difficult things to say. There are a few steps that I have taken that have helped me limit how many times I tell someone that I can’t help them right away.

First, I ask “When does this need to be completed?” When I ask this question, I gain insight as to how urgent the request is and if I will have enough time to complete it.

Second, I write it down. I have found that if I write the request down with the time it needs to be done I am more likely to complete the task in a timely manner. If you have a daily to-do list, write it on there. If you don’t have a daily to-do list, make one. Not only will this help you prioritize your day, but will help you say “yes” to more requests you receive throughout the day.

If you find that you are struggling with making a to-do list here are a few tips that should help:
– Think of everything you do or need to do
– Write it down
– Prioritize using different colors or fonts to make things stand out
– Add a date
– Organize the list so it is easy to follow
– Once the task is complete, mark it off

Lastly, I communicate with whoever has given me the request. Most of the time, I am able to complete the task earlier than needed; however, there are times I have to ask for help. Asking for help is not something I like to do. I used to think that asking for help was a sign of weakness. I have come to realize that it actually can be a strength. When you ask for help you are saying I have done everything I can to get this done, but I will not be able to complete it on my own.

The next time you feel overwhelmed by the number of requests or questions you have coming in follow the three steps above and I can almost guarantee you will be saying, “Yes, I can help you!” If you are following the steps above and still find that you are saying, “No, I can’t help” there are many resources on the internet that can help you prioritize your day.
