People often ask me what it’s like working in a small office and I always share with them the benefits and possibilities it has created for me. Often times when I am interviewing candidates or speaking with potential candidates their response when I ask “tell me what you are looking for to make a job change” is usually “a larger company that can provide growth opportunities.” When I hear this I like to share my own experience and success of working in a small office and prove that you can see growth and success working on a small team.
First and most importantly, it has taught me how to work closely and adapt by teaming up with people with different personalities. Over the past three and a half years working in the Celebrity Lincoln office, I have been part of small teams ranging from two to five people, and we all work close together to complete what needs to be done. I have had the privilege of building strong relationships with coworkers of all levels and tenure, and this has helped me grow in my personal and professional development and quickly adapt to the daily changes of our business.
Secondly, it has given me the opportunity to jump in and learn all aspects of the business inside and out. In a large corporate setting, most likely you will be stuck in a department seeing only how a fraction of the company runs. I get to see the full cycle of business in our office while getting the chance to take part in sourcing, recruiting, interviewing, candidate presentation, and account management that cross over into different areas of the team. This has helped me to diversify my skillset and jump in to assist both clients and candidates on a daily basis. This has also provided me with an opportunity of endless training and learning, which in turn has helped me make a bigger impact to the team.
Lastly, job satisfaction has come with working on a small team. Each day it allows me to grow and learn something new and see the business happen full cycle from start to finish. This has allowed me to land a promotion into a recruiter role which has presented me with a new set of exciting challenges, training, and a new growth opportunity in my career.
The next time you are looking to make a job change, don’t overlook the company or office size for growth opportunities. Bigger may not always be better.
