We have all been in a situation that does not turn out as we had hoped or expected, whether it’s a sales meeting that did not result in a closed deal, the fax machine that did not want to cooperate, or a date that quickly became awkward. Now, the positive energy you built up from your morning meeting is quickly turning negative and it seems like the rest of the day is going downhill. You may be asking yourself, why today? Believe me, you are not the only one who has had a bad day!
My day has already started off on the wrong foot. After checking my email, I discovered I had been rejected by three potential sponsors for my non profit event, running on four hours of sleep, AND an employee of mine decided to quit with zero notice. I started to think, what else could go wrong today? Well let me tell you. If I keep this negative mentality, then everything could go wrong. But what could go right? I’m here to tell you how to shake it off and turn a negative into a positive.
Take seven seconds Don’t let anyone tell you that you should just get over it and move on. If something is bothering you, you are entitled to your feelings. However, you are also entitled to a happy, productive day. Take seven seconds, be mad, be angry, vent, then move on and find a solution rather than letting a bad moment ruin your day. Negative thoughts lead to negative outcomes.
What are you grateful for? Remind yourself what you are grateful for! It’s easy to focus on the negatives when they are happening. If you focus on the positives, you are more likely to have a productive day. I have pictures of my friends and family on my desk. When I’m having a rough day, I take a look at them and remember how blessed my life truly is.
Find something to laugh about Nothing gets me out of my funk better than watching a funny video of animals in predicaments. There is something contagious about a good laugh that can turn your day around. Take that positive energy and push it into your work so you can finish out the day strong!
Breathe Take 5-10 deep breaths, in through your nose and out through your mouth. This will not only slow down your heart rate, but focusing on the single task of breathing takes your mind off all the other stresses going on around you. When you relax and breathe, you can put things into perspective and realize things are not as bad as they may seem.
Everyone has their off days and I do mean EVERYONE. The difference between successful people and those struggling to keep up has everything to do with stress management. I hope these help the next time your boss throws another project onto your already busy schedule or when your knight in shining armor turns out to be schmuck in tin foil.
