How to Foster Friendship at Work and Why It Is Important

Happy holidays everyone! I hope everyone had a safe and awesome Thanksgiving! As we rapidly slide into the Christmas season I wanted to take a minute to write about the importance of having a friendship or bond with your coworkers. Let’s face it; we spend larger chunks of consecutive time with our coworkers than we spend with our actual family. I have seen my coworkers during their birthdays, all of the holidays, significant times of joy in their lives, and I have even been around them as they went through loss. We all live through the ups and downs with one another. You don’t have to be best friends in the work place but wouldn’t your work life be a little more exciting if you were?

According to ForakerLabs blog written by Meg Popovic, bonding with coworkers enriches the day, helps us produce better work, and keeps us energized and excited to get in the office every day (makes perfect sense to me). Below are some ideas that could help develop your relationship with your coworkers!

  1. Say “hello” every morning: I know this seems like a no-brainer to you, but you would be surprised by how many people walk in and beeline for their desks. Whether you’ve had a bad or a good morning, having the common courtesy to say “hello” is a great way to start a relationship!
  2. Get out of the office and grab lunch: Team lunches really are a great way to grow the relationship within your team. Learning new things about your coworker in a context outside of the physical office and developing a deeper understanding of them will help with collaborating at work.
  3. Celebrating birthdays with more than just a card: I think it is great when we celebrate someone’s birthday on our team, but in my experience taking that extra step and going just a bit further will also help that bonding experience. Whether it is $5 in a card or buying a silly gag gift, it will inspire laughs and good times. Who doesn’t love that?

These are just small suggestions that I think could potentially take your working relationship to that next level. Again, I don’t expect everyone to become best friends, but speaking from experience some of the closest people to me these days are people I have worked with in the past or are my current coworkers.
