Jedi Mind Tricks at Work

Complaints at work. We’ve all got ‘em, we’ve all heard ‘em. Some of this might sound familiar.

Susie is always late. Bob talks too much. Joe makes a lot of mistakes and no one does anything about it. Anne uses her cell phone even though it is against policy. The complaints go on and on . . . and on and on. It’s easy to find problems and fault, isn’t it?

Take a closer look at the complaints listed above. What do you notice? They are all about someone else. Do we have power over anyone else? Last time I checked, the only person I can really control is myself. Unless you have learned how to waive your hand in the air like a Jedi Master and say, “you will be at work on time,” and the other person says, “I will be at work on time” then we need to step back and examine who we can really control. The only person is you. (Yes, that’s a Star Wars reference for those of you who just read that twice.)

What do your coworkers say about you? Can you be on time every day, or not take a few extra minutes at lunch every once and awhile? What about your work performance? It’s easy to complain about someone else, but not so easy to look in the mirror and examine your own flaws or areas for improvement. If you can practice asking yourself, “What can I do to improve?” and focus on yourself instead of others, you would be surprised at how you can change your attitude and performance. The possibilities are endless.

Forget about everyone else. Stop worrying if your manager is taking care of those issues and complaints that plagued you before. To be blunt, mind your own business. Turn the other cheek. Rise to the occasion. Or better yet, look in the mirror and wave your hand as you say to yourself, “I will not concern myself with anyone other than myself today.” Jedi mind tricks can work on you, too. It’s all in the power of self-talk and choice.

Choose wisely, young Jedi and may the force be with you.
