Job Search Tips

For job seekers, looking for a job is a job. You can spend a whole day looking on job boards, Craigslist, and in the newspaper for job openings and at the end of the day you might feel like you accomplished nothing. It may make you feel hopeless and defeated or anxiety hits and you panic because you cannot live your life without the almighty dollar. The good news is that every person who is looking for a job probably feels this way at one point or another and that is okay. Searching for a new career can be a slow and steady process, but it will be worth it in the end. As a job seeker, you want to find that perfect position at a great company with great benefits, and the good news is you will!

As a person in the job market, it is important to make sure your resume is updated. As recruiters, far too often we see resumes with incorrect information, short job descriptions, and sometimes very little to no information at all. It is important to remember to update dates of employment and positions held, education information such as certificates or licenses, achievements, and all job duties. As a job seeker, you want your resume to be a reflection of who you are professionally and show your skills and experience. It should be neat and easily readable. Make sure to check for spelling errors. Also, always include your phone number and email address! You want employers to be able to get in contact with you to discuss job opportunities.

When applying to job postings on job boards, you need to expect that a lot of those job postings are through staffing agencies or services. Today, employers are turning to agencies or staffing services to recruit for their open positions because it takes a lot of time to sort through hundreds of resumes to find candidates who could be potential fits. Some job seekers are turned off by this because they don’t have faith in the process and service that can be provided to them because of past bad experiences with other staffing agencies. This is not true for every agency, nor is it how Celebrity Staff conducts business! As a staffing agency, we want you to trust that we have your best interest at heart and are working to help you find that new career move. Sometimes the only way to get your foot in the door with a potential employer is to go through a staffing service. These employers specifically use a staffing service to search for candidates because they simply do not have the time or resources to do it internally. A staffing service is a free added resource to assist you in your job search, and it could be the link to a new career opportunity.

Every employer has their own interview process. Some of them only do a face-to-face interview and others will do a phone interview followed by a face-to-face or multiple face-to-face interviews. Keep in mind, every employer has a different process and could have a longer hiring process than other positions you have held in the past. This might be because they have to get approval to make the job offer to the candidate, make sure that all hiring officers are in agreement with the candidate they want to hire, and some might have skill testing they want completed. All of this is to ensure that you are the right fit for the position.

As you look for a new job, it is also important to make follow-up calls to those companies that you have interviewed with. This lets them know your interest in the position and organization. Also, follow up on applications and resumes you have submitted to companies or staffing services. It is your job to sell yourself on why you would be the best fit for that position and your persistence does not go unnoticed!

Do not get discouraged and keep pounding the pavement in your job search. There will be hurdles and obstacles to overcome, but it will all be worth it when you land that perfect job!

  1. I like that you talked about job boards and staffing agencies. It does seem like it would be a good idea to start with an employment agency. That seems like they would have the widest range of job listings.
