Searching for a job has never been a piece of cake. Sometimes searching for a new career is a full-time job within itself. It’s important to remember that you can’t control the outcome to every situation, but you can control your attitude and how you deal with this new change. Remaining positive while you’re out searching for a new career is going to be your key to success. Job searching can be stressful, but here are some helpful tips on how to remain dedicated to your search during such a time of uncertainty.
Stay organized. This one sounds like a no brainer, but sometimes searching for a new job can get messy if you don’t stay on top of things. My advice to you is write down everything. Keep a list of all the companies you’ve applied to as well as the job titles. It can be very embarrassing when receiving a call from a hiring manager/recruiter and not know what position it is that they are even calling you about. Keep it professional. Write down some main points about the position that interest you. Staying organized is step one in your key to success. This will help you remain not only dedicated to your search, but also give you the ability to follow up with specific companies you haven’t heard back from in a while.
Refresh your resume. There are many ways to refresh your resume. You can always go ahead and give it a nice clean look with editing and formats. My advice to you is always tailor your resume to specific positions you are applying for. This shows off specific skills you gained in a previous position while also showing what you can bring to the table for a company. It is important to quantify your experience, skills, and accomplishments on your resume. This will catch the eye of hiring managers when sorting through applications. There’s always a new opportunity to learn. There are multiple different platforms you can utilize to broaden your skills. Have you always wanted to become certified in a specific area? Do your research. There are plenty of websites out there that offer certification training in fields that will not only improve your skills, but also add to your experience and help you stand out.
Follow up. I know this was briefly mentioned, but I cannot stress this ENOUGH. Always follow up with the companies and positions you have been applying for. Taking that initiative shows your dedication and proves you are ready to take on that next career step in your life. Did you hear back from a company, but it wasn’t the update you were hoping for? That’s okay. You know what you can do during that situation? Reply and ask for feedback. Ask yourself, “How can I improve?” every day during your search. Job searching is always about improvement, learning about yourself, and growing as a professional. I promise you, taking control of your searches will be nothing but beneficial in the long run.
There are many ways to stay dedicated to your job search, but these three tips are what I’m always telling my candidates as well as my friends. Adding these things to your daily search, along with a positive outlook, will be nothing but great for you in the long run. Job searching is an endless learning experience, and a great way for you to grow as a professional. At times it seems tough and never ending, but I promise the right time will come for you when you least expect it. Everything will fall into place because everything happens for a reason.
