Careers, family, personal life, hobbies, goals. We all have these in common and are areas in our life that are important to each of us. Who doesn’t want personal fulfillment and satisfaction? If you are like me, this may be a challenge. I’m always in awe of others who seem to make it so easy to reach. My inner voice tells me it is attainable, just figure it out!
The timing of all this was ironic based on a conversation I had with a friend who struggles with this same aggravation that exists for me. An email invite prompted me to attend a recent business conference held by business leaders that led a discussion centered on work life balance. At first, I did nothing with the invite except look it over and over. Would this content be beneficial and time worth investing? I gave in as I wanted to listen to these people who are successful at managing it all! So for the sake of some personal development, this time away from the office was worth it. After all, personal growth is part of the balancing act!
What I learned from these very successful leaders who have more balance than myself is that even with their achievement and impressive careers they are still seeking to figure out this thing called Life. I left feeling refreshed! These respected professionals are finally calling her “bluff”. Work life balance is unrealistic, nearly impossible to achieve and it drives us crazy when we are not meeting all of life’s demands. Their message was get over it, stop chasing it, and quit comparing you versus your friend. Urban Direction defines Passe’ as past prime, aged, and old. I couldn’t agree more!
I’ll share with you what I found to be valuable for this new mind set shift:
* Find authentic ways and choose new approaches that work for you and only you.
*Balance is about making tradeoffs. Choose your focus for a period of time then move on to another area.
* Relationships matter, find your loves, and structure them. Family, friends, work, hobbies.
* Find harmony and be fully present.
Life is meant to be lived and enjoyed! So instead of chasing this mythical madness, replace the phrase “Work Life Balance” and embrace “A Life Well Lived”! It is so much more appealing, wouldn’t you agree?
